Reghu has to wait a further year before a place is available, spending this year working on his father’s land.
Though there is no dance tradition in his family, Reghu’s father loves Kathakali and from the age of five, takes Reghu with him to all-night performances of Kathakali at temple festivals. Reghu spends hours in the Green Room, watching the actors putting on their elaborate costumes and make-up. He sees ordinary men transformed into gods, demons, princes and beautiful young maidens. At home he practises the mudras, the eye movements, the dance steps, in front of a mirror.
Reghu knows from an early age that he is destined to be a Kathakali dancer. His family are very supportive, though his choice means great financial hardship for them for many years. They do insist however, that Reghu finishes his schooling first. It is not until the age of fifteen that he is able to realise his dream. |

During his time in England, Reghu will also be researching working with students with learning difficulties, particularly those with hearing impairments, using a combination of Sign and Kathakali mudras - a technique he has used successfully in Kerala.
