| Kathakali |
|
|
Kathakali is an ancient dance-drama, performed
only in Kerala.
The stories are episodes from the Indian epics the Mahabarata,
the Ramayana, the Puranas...
The texts are sung by one
or sometimes two singers and accompanied by drummers.
The
actors wear brilliantly coloured costumes and make-up
(it takes two hours for the actor to prepare).
|
The whole effect is entrancing and dramatic,
a combination of compelling drama, dance, story and music.
In recent years, Kathakali dance troupes regularly embark on
international tours, sponsored either by governments or through
private initiative. |
The Kathakali Centre
in Cochi is packed every night during the season with tourists
from every part of the world.
Kathakali has an appeal for
a widely-varied audience, from the connoisseur to the child
of seven.
Long ago in Kerala, there were huge feasts with
sixty-four different dishes. Something for everyone.
Kathakali is a bit like that. |
