DANCING THE STORY
Demonstrates how a story ( an excerpt from the Mahabarata
/Ramayana or an Indian folk-tale) can be developed through
choreographed patterns of movement, with ‘speaking’ hand
gestures (mudras) and an eloquent use of facial expression
and eye movement from the repertoire of the Kathakali actor.
Lion, elephant, cobra, tiger … a fish swimming in the river, a bird
alighting on a twig, the moon in the sky… all have their own eloquent
expression in the body language of the Kathakali actor… a language without
words. |

'THE NINE FACES OF THE HEART'*
The face alone , the naked face, devoid of colour, make-up,
glitter and adornments. ….. has ways of showing many
emotions….
A language without words ……love,
contempt, sorrow, fury, courage, fear, disgust, wonder, peace.
Our tools... the forehead, eyebrows, nostrils, mouth, chin
and thirty-two facial muscles.
That is all. For the Kathakali
actor, it is enough.
*Anita Nair's wonderful phrase |

THE ACTOR PREPARES
Showing how the natural colours are ground and made into
the paints that form the make-up of the Kathakali actor… An
opportunity to observe the complex application of the facial
patterns indicating the different characters , the application
of the rice-paste ‘beards’, the elaborate ritual
of dressing for the performance, from the yards of stiff
canvas underskirts to the final solemn donning of the heavy,
glittering head-dress.
The preparation can take two hours and for the Kathakali
enthusiast is an integral part of the Kathakali performance. |
